What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry eye syndrome is a chronic condition affecting nearly 16 million Americans where the eyes are uncomfortable due to a lack of natural tears or tears that do not function properly. The name dry eye can be misleading because one of the major symptoms of dry eye is having too many tears.
What are Dry Eye Symptoms?
Dry eye symptoms vary from mild to severe and are different for each patient. Some patients may experience:
-A scratching sensation like there is a piece of sand in the eye
-Burning and/or pain
-Tearing and/or crusting
-Eye fatigue
-Blurry vision
-Light sensitivity
-Red eyes
Some patients may not realize they have dry eye but notice the benefit of therapy after continued treatment.
What are Dry Eye Symptoms?
What Causes Dry Eye?
Our tear film is a complex environment created by multiple ocular structures. A change to any one of these structures may alter the balance on the surface of the eye leading to dry eye symptoms.
Some of the more common causes of dry eye include:
-Aging: As we age our hormones change causing lack of tear production
-Eyelid conditions such as malposition, blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction
-Autoimmune disorders such as Sjogren’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus
-Environmental factors such as too much screen time, wind, dry climate, and smoking
-Contact lens use
-Other systemic medications such as diuretics, antihistamines, and psychiatric medications

How is Dry Eye Diagnosed?
The diagnosis of dry eye requires a thorough eye exam to assess the various structures associated with maintaining a healthy level of tears. In addition to the exam there are a number of tests that can be performed to better understand your symptoms and help the doctor create a patient-specific treatment plan to alleviate any discomfort.
